Also, if you\u2019re doing these links for SEO, isn\u2019t the purpose that Google finds out about them?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>There is More to Nofollow than Simply Nofollow<\/h2>\n<p>The word \u201cnuance,\u201d in the context of language, is about a slight difference in meaning.<\/p>\n<p>John\u2019s tweet was about the additional nuance in the rel link element attribute.<\/p>\n<p>What John\u2019s comment contributed was that there is <em>also<\/em> the \u201csponsored\u201d link element attribute, in addition to the regular nofollow.<\/p>\n<p>The message is that while it\u2019s okay to use nofollows for sponsored outbound links, publishers have a choice to be more specific about what kind of nofollow attribute is used.<\/p>\n<p>For example, as John pointed out, one can also choose to use a rel=\u201dsponsored\u201d nofollow link attribute instead of the plain nofollow attribute.<\/p>\n<p>The rel=\u201dsponsored\u201d link attribute offers Google extra context for the link.<\/p>\n<p>The word semantic is about the meaning in language.<\/p>\n<p>The rel=\u201dsponsored\u201d link attribute offers extra meaning to Google about the context of the outbound link that is being nofollowed as rel=\u201dsponsored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Official Google documentation does not tell how Google uses the extra semantic information.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s official documentation for the various kinds of nofollow link attributes recommends that it is Google\u2019s preference that publishers use the appropriate versions of the rel link attribute.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of sponsored links, Mueller\u2019s tweet echoes Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/crawling-indexing\/qualify-outbound-links\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official documentation<\/a> on sponsored outbound links which explicitly <em>recommends<\/em>, rel=\u201dsponsored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the official Google recommendation:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201crel=\u201dsponsored\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mark links that are advertisements or paid placements (commonly called paid links) with the sponsored value.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026Note: The nofollow attribute was previously recommended for these types of links and is still an acceptable way to flag them, though sponsored is preferred.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Use Nofollow on User Generated Content (UGC)?<\/h2>\n<p>The infographic also recommends using the nofollow attribute on User Generated Content (UGC).<\/p>\n<p>UGC content is content that is posted by third party readers, such as on the comments section of blog, in user reviews or in discussion forums.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is a warning in the infographic about UGC links (links posted by users) that states:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll become spammy soon if don\u2019t nofollow these links\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That statement is actually less than correct.<\/p>\n<p>For SEO, there is nothing wrong with UGC links <em>if the outbound links are properly moderated<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s guidelines <em>explicitly<\/em> says to mark sponsored links with a nofollow or rel=UGC attribute.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMark links that are advertisements or paid placements (commonly called paid links) with the sponsored value.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There is no ambiguity there, it\u2019s a \u201cdo this\u201d statement, not an optional recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to&nbsp; how Google wants the sponsored link treated, Google only <em>recommends<\/em> a rel=\u201dugc\u201d link attribute for user generated links.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is what Google\u2019s guidelines on UGC links says:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe recommend marking user-generated content (UGC) links, such as comments and forum posts, with the ugc value.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026If you want to recognize and reward trustworthy contributors, you might remove this attribute from links posted by members or users who have consistently made high-quality contributions over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So, adding the rel=\u201dugc\u201d nofollow link attribute is something that is optional.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly then, outbound links from user generated content are not inherently bad or problematic, not bad for Google and not problematic for the publisher \u2013 as long as the publisher is moderating those outbound links.<\/p>\n<p>If UGC links were across the board bad and problematic, Google wouldn\u2019t write that it\u2019s okay to allow UGC links if the users are trustworthy.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s an <em>if<\/em> in that statement and it\u2019s a big <em>if<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to keep an eye on user generated links can result in spammers adding links to spammy sites, sometimes in a way that is hidden.<\/p>\n<p>That is something that <em>can<\/em> be problematic for a publisher.<\/p>\n<h2>The Technical Nuance of SEO<\/h2>\n<p>SEO is increasingly more complicated and technical and there\u2019s a lot to take in.<\/p>\n<p>One literally must have an encyclopedic memory to remember all the components of SEO.<\/p>\n<p>Even for someone like myself, who\u2019s been in the business for over 20 years, there are some things where one remembers the general outlines of certain specifics because there is simply so much to know.<\/p>\n<p>Good thing we have someone like John Mueller to remind us of the nuance now and then.<\/p>\n<p><em>Featured image by Shutterstock\/Kateryna Onyshchuk<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google\u2019s John Mueller answered a tweet about the proper use of nofollow for SEO, while agreeing with the tweet, he also pointed out a nuance about the nofollow attribute that was missing.
