Showing what a competitor is doing better than you is one of the best ways to get stakeholder buy-in.<\/p>\n
Need help getting started with your competitive analysis? I created a checklist with everything you need \u2013 and in this article, we\u2019ll cover a comprehensive nine-step guide to conducting your own analysis.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve split the checklist into two sections:<\/p>\n
Domain-Wide Analysis<\/h3>\n
These sections focus on domain (or subdomain) level analysis and aim to uncover a domain\u2019s relative strength or performance.<\/p>\n
For example, backlink data.<\/p>\n
Page Type Analysis<\/h3>\n
These sections focus on specific page type analysis. For instance, assessing the UX, design, and content of a page type.<\/p>\n
Page types can include:<\/p>\n

- Homepage.<\/li>\n
- Category, product, or service pages.<\/li>\n
- Blog\/guide pages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
When working through page type sections, view samples of different page types for your site and your competitors.<\/p>\n
Additionally, ensure that you compare the same page types<\/a> for a fair comparison.<\/p>\n
For example, you wouldn\u2019t want to compare a product page from one site against a category page on another site.<\/p>\n
Task Notes<\/h3>\n
For some checklist items, task notes are provided to help with the analysis.<\/p>\n
There are also \u201cOpportunities\u201d and \u201cThreats\u201d columns that you can use to brain dump things you notice during the analysis. I find it a great way to free up headspace and organize notes you might return to.<\/p>\n
Now, let\u2019s dive into the nine steps to conducting a competitive analysis.<\/p>\n
1. Identifying The Search Landscape<\/h2>\n
This part of the analysis will show the competitive landscape based on estimated traffic share.<\/p>\n
This will form the foundation of your analysis.<\/p>\n
What You\u2019ll Look At<\/h3>\n

- Who are your search competitors?<\/li>\n
- Estimated traffic share (segmented by intent and topics).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Gathering Your Data<\/h3>\n
For this section, you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n
Requirement 1<\/strong>: A relevant, non-branded keyword research list with associated search volumes.<\/p>\n
Requirement 2: <\/strong>Keywords classified by intent<\/a> and topics.<\/p>\n
If you don\u2019t have an extensive keyword research list and\/or there isn\u2019t intent classification, you can do a bit of quick and dirty research:<\/p>\n
Enter your domain into a tool like Semrush<\/a> or Ahrefs<\/a>.<\/p>\n
In Semrush, there is a \u201cMain Organic Competitors\u201d feature; in Ahrefs, the same feature is called \u201cCompeting domains.\u201d<\/p>\n
The video below demonstrates how to enter a domain into Semrush to see organic competitors:<\/p>\n
- \n
- Select the top performing competitors (2\u20135 competitors will do)<\/strong>. You\u2019ll be entering these domains into either Semrush or Ahrefs to extract the keywords they rank for.<\/li>\n
- To help speed up the intent classification, extract the keywords and ranking URLs that a blog subfolder, i.e., exampledomain.com\/blog\/ (or subdomain, i.e., blog.example.com), ranks for<\/strong>. You can then classify these keywords as \u201cinformational.\u201d<\/li>\n
- Enter the domains again, but exclude the blog subfolders<\/strong> this time. These keywords can be classified as \u201ctransactional.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
I also recommend setting the tools to only extract keywords that rank between positions 1-20 to help avoid pulling through irrelevant keywords.<\/p>\n
You may need to spend several hours refining that initial list to ensure it makes sense.<\/p>\n
Semrush has a feature that defines the intent of keywords<\/a> when you export them. This can also help speed up the eyeballing of your keyword list.<\/p>\n
Unless you\u2019re going to spend hours classifying keywords by topics, you might have to give topic classification a miss. It\u2019s not the end of the world for this task.<\/p>\n
Requirement 3<\/strong>: Click-through rates (CTRs) to get estimated traffic share. Advanced Web Ranking<\/a> is my go-to choice for getting CTR values.<\/p>\n
The formula you need to apply to get estimated traffic share is:<\/p>\n
CTR * keyword search volume = estimated traffic share.<\/p>\n

- Understanding whether competitors have invested in informational content<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
- Evaluating whether any of the insights should be considered a threat<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
To bring some color to the outcomes, I worked with a client whose competitor had clearly invested in informational content<\/a>.<\/p>\n
The chart below illustrates that the content was estimated to generate significant monthly traffic.<\/p>\n

This part of the analysis will outline the strength of competitor sites from a backlink perspective.<\/p>\n
While backlinks aren\u2019t as influential as they used to be, they\u2019re still a core part of Google\u2019s ranking algorithms.<\/p>\n

- Correlations between link quality and ranking in positions 1-3.<\/li>\n

Majestic SEO<\/a> is my go-to tool for backlink data and, therefore, will be the choice of tool for the metrics we want to analyze.<\/p>\n
However, feel free to use comparative metrics from other tools.<\/p>\n
For this section, you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n
Requirement 1<\/strong>: Overall domain Trust Flow and referring domains for each domain you\u2019re analyzing.<\/p>\n
Requirement 2<\/strong>: Homepage Trust Flow and referring domains for each domain you\u2019re analyzing.<\/p>\n
Requirement 3<\/strong>: Average Trust Flow of URLs that have keywords ranking in positions 1\u20133 and the count of ranking keywords in positions 1\u20133.<\/p>\n
You\u2019ll need to return to your search landscape spreadsheet and pull through Trust Flow scores for each URL.<\/p>\n
Majestic has a Bulk Backlink<\/a> feature that will allow you to get Trust Flow URL data, or you could even use Screaming Frog to sync to the Majestic API<\/a>.<\/p>\n
And your search landscape tab should have the keyword ranks for each domain you\u2019re analyzing. From that, you can pull through the count of ranking keywords in positions 1\u20133 for each domain.<\/p>\n
Requirement 4<\/strong>: To view monthly referring domain link acquisition over time in Majestic, click Tools<\/em> > Compare Domains<\/em> > Backlink History<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This section looks at how your brand awareness stacks up against competitors.<\/p>\n
The importance of brand awareness is indisputable; Think of things like brand association and recall.<\/p>\n
It can also indirectly benefit SEO.<\/p>\n
For instance, the more people that are aware of your brand, the more likely they are to link to you or search for your brand, to begin with.<\/p>\n
A more debatable theory is the direct link between brand awareness and rankings.<\/p>\n
Regardless, given the impact brand awareness can have on a business, it\u2019s useful to know how you stack up against competitors.<\/p>\n
What You\u2019ll Look At<\/h3>\n

- Who has the strongest brand awareness?<\/li>\n
- Who has the strongest product\/service association?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
From this, you can get an idea of:<\/p>\n

Google Trends<\/a> is the tool of choice to use here.<\/p>\n
For this section, you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n
Requirement 1<\/strong>: To add {brand name} into Google Trends (e.g. \u201cboohoo\u201d).<\/p>\n
Requirement 2<\/strong>: To add {brand name} {product \/ service} into Google Trends (e.g \u201cboohoo dresses\u201d).<\/p>\n

This will require a bit of manual digging and running crawls to scale insights.<\/p>\n

This section will look at on-page elements such as title tags.<\/p>\n

In essence, we want to know how useful and engaging the user experience of a site is.<\/p>\n
Does the user experience make it easy for a user to complete an action?<\/p>\n
Or is the site difficult to understand and navigate \u2013 and, therefore, more likely to lead to a bounce back to search results?<\/p>\n
The link between user engagement metrics (think pogo-sticking<\/a> and CTR<\/a>) and the impact on SEO have long been debated.<\/p>\n
At the very least, it\u2019s fair to argue there\u2019s an indirect link with SEO.<\/p>\n
For instance, a site that provides a good user experience is more likely to get a backlink, return visits, and so on.<\/p>\n
However, beyond SEO, we know a site with a good user experience has a better chance of affecting the bottom line.<\/p>\n
Overall, it\u2019s an important area to assess.<\/p>\n

Informational content is important. It can have a range of benefits, including:<\/p>\n

- Brand building<\/strong>. The more people that land on a certain brand\u2019s blog or see their blog ranking in search results, the more likely they are to search for the brand directly.<\/li>\n

- Building retargeting lists<\/strong> for paid media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

CWV Chrome UX data<\/a> for your site and competitors for the below metrics:<\/p>\n
