Today, Google begins rolling out the helpful content algorithm update, which rewards people-first content and devalues content written for search engines.<\/p>\n

On its official search rankings update page, Google confirms the release of the helpful content update on August 25<\/p>\n

Last week, Google announced<\/a> the update was on its way and suggested many ways to determine if your content qualifies as \u201cpeople-first.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the spirit of today\u2019s update, I will attempt to make Google\u2019s advice even more helpful by providing additional context.<\/p>\n

Here are seven things you need to know to ensure you\u2019re creating people-first content based on guidance provided by Google.<\/p>\n

1. Don\u2019t Stray Too Far From Your Main Topic<\/h2>\n

\u201cDo you have an existing or intended audience for your business or site that would find the content useful if they came directly to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

With this advice, Google may be trying to tell people to stick to their area of expertise.<\/p>\n

Creating content for search engines can sometimes mean publishing articles outside your niche.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say you have a recipe website and see an opportunity to capitalize on a high-volume keyword related to skin care.<\/p>\n

While the article may be helpful, an existing audience that comes to the site expecting recipes is unlikely to find it helpful.<\/p>\n
