It\u2019s been a year ranking at this position. What should I do to improve the rankings now?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Adam Riemer<\/a> from Adam Riemer Marketing shares his response with Miranda Miller, Writer & Editor, in this edition of Ask An SEO.<\/p>\n

Evaluating internal pages that may be competing against your candidates for optimization is an important first step, he says.<\/p>\n

Improving Page Speed and Core Web Vitals may also give you new opportunities to improve rankings.<\/p>\n

Adam shares a step-by-step process for finding opportunities to improve existing content with local schema, improving a user\u2019s on-page experience, getting links from relevant media sources, and more.<\/p>\n

Ask An SEO: Improving Rankings With Adam Riemer [Full Transcript]<\/h2>\n

Miranda Miller<\/strong>: Hello, and welcome to Ask An SEO. \u2026 This week, we have with us Adam Riemer from Adam Riemer Marketing, AdamRiemer.me<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The question that people have for you this week comes from Faith.<\/p>\n

Faith has a few keywords ranking on the fourth or fifth page of Google. They\u2019ve been stable there for about a year, and she would like to know: What can she do to improve those rankings now?<\/p>\n

Adam Riemer<\/strong>: Okay. That\u2019s a good question and comes up way too often. I have to deal with that with a lot of clients. Well, not deal with it, but I get to solve that problem for a lot of clients.<\/p>\n

Improving Rankings For Existing Content, Step By Step<\/h3>\n

Adam Riemer<\/strong>: And basically, the very first thing I do is, I\u2019ll take a tool, whether it\u2019s Authority Labs<\/a> or Semrush;<\/a> I think Ahrefs<\/a> does this too.<\/p>\n

And I\u2019ll look to see: Do we have competing pages in those positions?<\/p>\n

And is there one with an indent after it, maybe? And from there, I\u2019ll be like, Okay, well\u2026 do both of these pages need to exist? <\/em><\/p>\n

If there is nothing competing and it\u2019s just one page there, I start to look at the page experience, and I say, Okay, why is this not the best experience for the user or for the search query?<\/em><\/p>\n

And then we start to address, and you can look at, Do we properly explain the concept?<\/em><\/p>\n

Is the article as good as it could be? <\/em><\/p>\n

Is it formatted correctly? Could it use some bulking up? <\/em><\/p>\n

Sometimes, one thing I\u2019ve had to do a lot recently\u2026 there\u2019s a case study on my website right now recently, I have to delete most of the copy because people just wrote copy to hit a minimum word count<\/a> by actually reducing it, and just sharing the actual information.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve been able to pop our clients up to the top positions from there.<\/p>\n

Another option you can do, if everything\u2019s perfect and your copy\u2019s great\u2026 you can start to look at Page Speed<\/a> and Core Web Vitals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not going to move the needle much, but when it does, it\u2019s going to help you convert more traffic and decrease your bounce rate.<\/p>\n

Another thing you can try to do is build some internal links<\/a> from contextually relevant content.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t want to just link to that page off of keywords for the sake of doing it.<\/p>\n

Build out your content strategy. Look for previous articles.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re on WordPress, for example, you can log in, click on posts, and then click on pages.<\/p>\n

You do this twice and type in the keyword or a similar version of the keyword. And that\u2019ll pull up a list of the actual pages that mention this. And you can start building words that way.<\/p>\n

You can also use search operators<\/a>. We\u2019ll do site, put your URL in, and then in quotation marks, you\u2019ll put in the keyword phrase, and it\u2019ll scan through your website for mentions of that specific keyword or phrase throughout the site.<\/p>\n

And now you have a list of pages you can build internal links from.<\/p>\n

You can also try doing PR work. So if your content or if your page is genuinely good enough, then you can probably attract backlinks from major media,<\/a> possibly bloggers.<\/p>\n

Tips For Local Businesses<\/h3>\n

Adam Riemer<\/strong>: If you\u2019re local, go for local websites and complementary companies, and try to do it that way. It won\u2019t be an immediate result, but you will start to see climbing if it\u2019s good.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s a product page and you\u2019re not the manufacturer, it doesn\u2019t make sense to give you an anchor or a backlink.<\/p>\n

So what you want to do then is you want to create content that\u2019s worth linking to<\/a> and get backlinks that way, and pass the authority to the page.<\/p>\n

Those are all different ways you can pop up from position or page four and five to the front page of Google and possibly overtake it.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Forget About Schema<\/h3>\n

The last thing to look at, and probably should be done earlier, is the schema.<\/p>\n

A lot of people forget that schema.org<\/a> does update its libraries regularly. So you\u2019ll want to go in and say, Do I have everything here? Did I add a video?<\/em><\/p>\n

And is there video object schema<\/a>?<\/em><\/p>\n

Do I have FAQs on here? <\/em><\/p>\n

Or did I add some, and is there FAQ schema?<\/em><\/p>\n

If it\u2019s listed as an article, because maybe you\u2019re a publisher, there\u2019s probably a part, and you can nest it in the has part portion of the schema.<\/p>\n

And those are always\u2026 you can actually take your page from the fourth and fifth page of Google and bump it up to page one while achieving some featured rich results.<\/p>\n

Evaluating A Visitor\u2019s Page Experience<\/h3>\n

Miranda Miller<\/strong>: That is awesome. That\u2019s great information, Adam.<\/p>\n

I have a couple of follow-up questions for you.<\/p>\n

I was wondering \u2013 when you\u2019re evaluating page experience, the experience that any given user is having on that website and on that specific page, do you use tools to help you with that?<\/p>\n

Or is it a largely manual process, and what are you looking for?<\/p>\n

Adam Riemer<\/strong>: Depends on what I\u2019m looking at on the page, specifically.<\/p>\n

If I notice it\u2019s just going really slow, then I\u2019ll use webpagetest.org<\/a>. That\u2019s my first go-to tool because the waterfall is very easy to dissect, and they\u2019ve now added Core Web Vitals \u2013 that\u2019s similar to what you\u2019ll see in Search Console.<\/p>\n

So that way, I can say, Okay, this is rendering first<\/em>. This is coming, or this is being pulled in first before we actually start to render the page,<\/em> and we can move it to the end. It doesn\u2019t need to be there.<\/p>\n

We can identify all the fonts and everything else that\u2019s slowing down the page.<\/p>\n

We can also look for scripts and code that aren\u2019t being used anymore \u2013 because it\u2019s all just right there in front of you.<\/p>\n

Another thing I\u2019ll do is, a lot of time, branding teams will come in and say, \u201cNo, this is the messaging that we have to use.<\/p>\n

And this is what we want for our thing, for our product or our service or our content.\u201d<\/p>\n

When in reality, that\u2019s what they<\/em> want. That\u2019s not what the end user or what these search engines think.<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re not going to give the proper words and the proper message to your users, then you\u2019re not going to get those users.<\/p>\n

So what I do is I make that same branding team go on a video call outside, both of us, and we will start saying the H1 tag and the top blurb to random people or the students, saying, What does this mean?<\/em><\/p>\n

What do we offer? What do we do? <\/em><\/p>\n

Nine times out of ten, people can\u2019t answer, and they have no idea. And it really drives it home.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve made a fortune 500 CEO actually stand outside and say what his branding team made us put on the website \u2013 it did not go well.<\/p>\n

But it drove the point home: That nobody knows what it is we do or sell or what the content of the article\u2019s supposed to be. <\/strong><\/p>\n

And this is a great way to start to make it resonate; okay, let\u2019s keep the messaging while keeping branding and tax. So there\u2019s a good balance. So really, it just depends on what the goal is and what we\u2019re looking at for page experience.<\/p>\n

Tips For Getting Noticed By Busy News Media Professionals<\/h3>\n

Miranda Miller<\/strong>: That\u2019s great. And the other thing I wondered about is when we\u2019re talking about link building and getting in front of news media<\/a> and, you know, people who might give you a relevant link.<\/p>\n

What tips do you have to stand out in a jam-packed inbox?<\/p>\n

Adam Riemer<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Avoid \u201cMeWe\u201d syndrome and compliment them.<\/p>\n

And I actually did this with a client yesterday. I said, \u201cYour email was not the best it could have been.\u201d<\/p>\n

They were like, \u201cWhy? We covered everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the problem. Let\u2019s go through and read this.<\/p>\n

And every time a sentence starts with \u201cI,\u201d \u201dWe,\u201d \u201cOurs,\u201d or \u201cMy,\u201d I put a finger up. And if those words appeared in the sentence again, they get two fingers for each one.<\/p>\n

So within the first three sentences, we had already hit 10 fingers pointing up.<\/p>\n

How is this about the journalist? They were like: \u201cBecause they write about this topic.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s not about the journalist. \u201cAbout the journalist\u201d means you\u2019ve read two or three of their articles and probably visited their social media.<\/p>\n

So what I do is I look for an older article that they\u2019re probably proud of and a recent one that are both topically relevant.<\/p>\n

And then I say,<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cHey, thank you for your article about this, this and this. The point about halfway down where you mention WordPress versus Wix versus GoDaddy, for example, and the way that you called out the brand new features that launched, I had no idea that you could do this with X, Y, and Z CRM systems or CMS systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So then you want to say, \u201cI also notice you updated here where you have WordPress versus Squarespace. Have you considered doing a comparison chart and maybe adding X, Y, Z in, and X, Y, Z would be the new client?\u201d Just to introduce and say, they have these features, including the ones you personally enjoyed in your review under the pros and cons list here.<\/p>\n

And now what you\u2019re doing is you\u2019re showing you actually read it, and you\u2019re giving a reason to include, and you\u2019re saying, this is the only one.<\/p>\n

Or you can say, \u201cX, Y, Z company has this feature just like this company. And just like that one, but it\u2019s not available there. And they\u2019re actually doing this. I work with them. I would be happy to give you a complimentary account if you\u2019d like to review it.\u201d<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s just a product page\u2026 like, we\u2019re both wearing T-shirts. So maybe it\u2019s the top 30 T-shirts or the best 30 T-shirts for interviewing on Search Engine Journal.<\/p>\n

So we go in, and we see Cosmopolitan<\/em> and Refinery 29<\/em> and Rolling Stone<\/em> and all these other publications \u2013 one, you\u2019re going to need an affiliate program because they\u2019re all affiliate sites now.<\/p>\n

And two, you\u2019re going to also need to cater to the journalist. Well, that\u2019s actually not true because the journalists in those publications specifically do have editorial control, and not everything on those lists has to be an affiliate link. It just helps, which means you don\u2019t get your backlink because it\u2019s gonna go through a 307 redirect.<\/p>\n

But this is me rambling. And I\u2019m sorry, please keep me focused.<\/p>\n

Miranda Miller<\/strong>: You\u2019re good.<\/p>\n

Adam Riemer<\/strong>: Good for hours.<\/p>\n

Miranda Miller<\/strong>: That is a lot of great advice. And as an editor, I can tell you, we can smell it a mile away if you\u2019ve just dropped our name in<\/a> there and didn\u2019t actually, like, put any homework into what the publication is about and why we would link to you.<\/p>\n

And yeah. If\u2026 what did you call it? \u201cMeWe\u201d syndrome \u2013 if you\u2019re just talking about yourself. You\u2019re just that guy in the corner at the party. Nobody wants to talk to you, nobody wants to give you a link.<\/p>\n

Adam Riemer<\/strong>: Can I finish the one part real quick? Sorry. So, yeah.<\/p>\n

So when you\u2019re going through that list, it\u2019s not enough. You can click on the author\u2019s name, and you\u2019ll see all of the articles they\u2019ve written.<\/p>\n

So what you want to do then, because we\u2019re going to be pitching our T-shirt, is we want to say: \u201cOkay, your article here, I had no idea that Lululemon produces T-shirts.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then say, \u201cIn your recent one, the third one down where you featured the green T-shirt with XYZ prank is stunning. Thank you for the link off to Nordstrom. Our company offers this type of T-shirt, which is missing. It\u2019s made from an eco-friendly thing here, which I notice may be a big topic for you because you wrote about eco-friendly hair ties and eco-friendly telephones.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m just looking at stuff that\u2019s on. And it sounds weird. I have hair ties. I just bought them for my neighbor.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how you get in front of them: You show that you actually paid attention. <\/strong><\/p>\n

You thank them for their advice, and you cater to what matters to them and take out the mentions of \u201cI, we, and our,\u201d and talk about them to them and compliment their work. That\u2019s how you do it.<\/p>\n

We get about\u2026 out of every five emails we send, we get about three responses, and usually, at least one of those turns into a yes, because we take the time. We don\u2019t have as much outreach, but it\u2019s more effective outreach.<\/p>\n

Miranda Miller<\/strong>: Nice. I love that. There\u2019s no spray-and-pray happening. Exactly. Well, thank you, Adam,<\/p>\n
