The SEO field has no shortage of acronyms.<\/p>\n

From SEO, to FID, to FCP (First Contentful Paint), to INP \u2013 these are some of the more common acronyms you will run into when it comes to page speed.<\/p>\n

Google is currently in the process of changing Core Web Vitals.<\/p>\n

It has added two new metrics to the mix: INP (Interaction To Next Paint) and TTFB (Time to First Byte).<\/p>\n

INP refers to how the page responds to specific user interactions that are programmed into the overall INP metric measured by Google Chrome\u2019s lab data and field data.<\/p>\n

TTFB measures the length of time that it takes for the first byte to be transferred by the server.<\/p>\n

TTFB has long been suspected as a driver of significant performance gains, which means that it\u2019s a priority that SEO professionals should be optimizing as part of their SEO process.<\/p>\n

Google only recently decided to implement TTFB as a new metric so that SEO pros can measure how their site performs at the server level.<\/p>\n

For the purposes of this discussion, we will be sticking with INP this round.<\/p>\n

What, Exactly, Is INP?<\/h2>\n

INP is a new Core Web Vitals metric designed to provide a representation of the overall interaction delay of a page.<\/p>\n

It does this by working from a sample of the single longest interactions that happen when a user visits the page.<\/p>\n

If a page has less than 50 total interactions, INP takes into consideration the interaction that has the absolute worst delay.<\/p>\n

The measurement of INP is a representation of how long a user has to take in order to interact with the entire page.<\/p>\n

This is a direct contrast to FID (First Input Delay).<\/p>\n

FID simply measures only the first response of interaction by a particular user.<\/p>\n

The Mechanics Of INP<\/h2>\n

JavaScript is typically the primary signal of any interaction made on a page.<\/p>\n

Other types of interactivity do exist, including radio buttons, check boxes, the HTML <details> element, and several others.<\/p>\n
