With compelling content marketing and an SEO-optimized website, your aim is for them to discover your B2B brand during that research process.<\/p>\n In addition to getting prospects through the front door, it\u2019s important to track them as they move toward the back door. Conversion tracking can show how many customers you acquired along with the marketing campaigns that played a part in the sale.<\/p>\n In a Content Marketing World presentation, A-Z Conversion Tracking Issues for B2B and How to Solve Them<\/a>, Leslie Carruthers says conversion tracking for B2B:<\/p>\n Conversion tracking can also be used to quantify your marketing team\u2019s performance and secure future budget approvals from the C-suite.<\/p>\n According to Leslie, \u201cWe\u2019re here to prove the website\u2019s working so that you can benefit from it. With conversion tracking, you\u2019ll be rewarded with the data you need to go get the budget to do all the amazing things that you have in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n In her presentation, Leslie shares the top five B2B conversion tracking issues, along with ways to address those issues.<\/p>\n Instead of buying directly from the brand, many B2B customers buy from a reseller or distributor. B2B brands may have tens, hundreds, or even thousands of resellers and distributors in their channel network.<\/p>\n In this model, prospects visit the brand\u2019s web properties to research and evaluate its products, then venture to a reseller\u2019s website. While there, the prospect might engage with a sales professional, obtain pricing, and ultimately purchase the product.<\/p>\n Leslie shares the example of a multibillion-dollar organization that sold its products via distributors and how it used conversion tracking:<\/p>\n As you can see, at the first stage, the organization is relatively blind to how customers are converting (e.g., finding distributors from whom to purchase). In the third stage, the organization uses weighted values to determine which marketing channels lead to the most valuable conversions.<\/p>\n Assign dollar values to goals based on their importance to the sale, says @LeslieCarruther. \u200f<\/a><\/span> Click To Tweet<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n Here are the goal values that organization chose:<\/p>\n According to Leslie, it\u2019s important that the marketing team regularly audit the assigned goal values and determine whether they should be updated.<\/p>\n In addition to tracking macro conversions, Leslie recommends organizations track activity related to distributors. While an organization may be blind to a product sale by distributor A, it can quantify website activity related to that distributor. Here\u2019s what she recommends doing:<\/p>\n The \u201cgarbage-in, garbage-out\u201d analogy can be made for conversion tracking. If your conversion goals don\u2019t make sense or don\u2019t connect with business goals, then conversion tracking is meaningless.<\/p>\n Leslie gives the example of a financial company that set goal values backwards:<\/p>\n The company was giving the highest goal value to a micro goal (clicks), with zero value given to the completion of an application (i.e., the most important macro conversion). These values create misleading indicators: 10 completed applications would trigger no signs of success, while 10,000 page views might signal the best month in company history.<\/p>\n In another example, Leslie describes a company that had a confusing set of search features and thank you pages: \u201cThis company had no fewer than three zip code search events on the site, all resolving to different thank you pages. (It also had) two different \u2018find a pro\u2019 contact goals and two different contact form submit goals. It was difficult to track conversions back to the originating search page.<\/p>\n Leslie\u2019s advice is to take a step back and identify what you want visitors to do on your site or on particular pages. Examples include:<\/p>\n Next, separate your macro goals (more important) from your micro goals (less important). Here\u2019s an example from Leslie:<\/p>\n Finally, Leslie recommends interviewing customers<\/a> so they can help validate your goals. A conversion is a completed sale. The value of the conversion is the total sale amount. In a B2B transaction, where numerous conversions lead to a sale, it can be challenging to assign values to each conversion (e.g., goal).<\/p>\n Leslie\u2019s approach is to use historical data<\/a> to create goal values. The historical data might include:<\/p>\n Leslie explains, \u201cIf you know that when someone watches a video 2% of viewers convert to a sale, and your average order of value is $500, you could then assign a goal value for watching a video of $10.\u201d<\/p>\n In other words, if 2% of video views result in a $500 sale, then the value of each view is $500 multiplied by 0.02, or $10.<\/p>\n According to Leslie, \u201cThe reason to assign values to goals is to be able to evaluate marketing campaigns and channels.\u201d She recommends evaluating goal values periodically to ensure that they correctly represent customers\u2019 paths to conversion.<\/p>\n Evaluate goals periodically to ensure they correctly represent customers\u2019 paths to conversion. @LeslieCarruther<\/a><\/span> Click To Tweet<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n In the example of video views, the goal values need to be adjusted if the key assumptions change (e.g., average order value and conversion rate from video view to completed sale).<\/p>\n Conversion tracking can be challenging when the conversion activity happens on an external site. Common scenarios are with payment processors and event management platforms:<\/p>\n Another scenario that can complicate conversion tracking is when a blogging or content marketing platform hosts your content on a subdomain (e.g., your website is example.com, while your blog is at blog.example.com).<\/p>\n In both scenarios, data might show that most of your conversions are coming from direct or referral traffic. This would be incorrect. As Leslie explains, \u201cThe issue here is we can\u2019t make correct decisions, we can\u2019t allocate our budget if everything looks like it\u2019s coming from direct and referral sources.\u201d<\/p>\n If you\u2019re running Google Analytics, then the solution is to set up cross-domain tracking. According to a Google Analytics help page<\/a>, \u201cCross-domain tracking makes it possible for Analytics to see sessions on two related sites (such as an e-commerce site and a separate shopping cart site) as a single session.\u201d<\/p>\n Cross-domain tracking lets @googleanalytics \u200fsee sessions on 2 related sites as a single session. @LeslieCarruther<\/a><\/span> Click To Tweet<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n You may need the help of a web developer on your IT team to make this happen. According to the same Google Analytics help page, you need to be comfortable editing in HTML and coding in JavaScript. You can add the relevant domains to the Google Analytics JavaScript code on your website.<\/p>\n Once complete, conversion reporting in Google Analytics will group the external sites with your own, giving you more reliable source attribution<\/a>. Rather than direct and referral, you now see the true channel or program responsible for conversions.<\/p>\n HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Leslie gives the example of a B2B e-commerce company that inadvertently tracked conversions in both Google Ads and Google Analytics. The result? Its return on advertising spend was reported as $13 when it was $7.50.<\/p>\n Don\u2019t track conversions in Google Ads AND Google Analytics if you want accurate numbers, says @LeslieCarruther.\u200f<\/a><\/span> Click To Tweet<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n To fix this, confirm that double tracking is happening. Compare the numbers from your ad platform (e.g., Google Ads) and your analytics platform (e.g., Google Analytics). If you\u2019re not familiar with this, work with an agency or someone who is an expert to let you know if the problem exists.<\/p>\n Once double tracking is confirmed, keep the tracking on your preferred source, and disable it on the other one.<\/p>\n Let\u2019s compare your marketing organization to a basketball team. You won your first five games in convincing fashion. However, the team statistician had the flu, so you didn\u2019t record the minutes, points, rebounds, assists, and steals credited to each player.<\/p>\n How can the coach decide on the starting lineup for the next game? How can the league decide which players to name to the all-star team? They can\u2019t, because there\u2019s no data to inform them about the players\u2019 performance.<\/p>\n This is what it can be like for a B2B marketing organization that runs without effective conversion tracking. Sales happened, but the marketing team doesn\u2019t have the conversion data to set up for future success \u2013 to evaluate marketing efficiency, to maximize spending, and to improve profits.<\/p>\n Before hurrying off to generate the next 100 leads for your sales team, get your conversion tracking in order.
